I love reading and hearing birth stories, I always have. So when I started noticing that all the older information, even novels, always featured older women attending and supporting at births, it started to stand out. Then I began reading books specifically about birth and it all clicked. It’s easy to see that no matter the era in history, women crave having a woman (or women) they trust at their side during birth.
Having your partner there is absolutely essential, but adding a doula or other trained support person to your team is a proven way to improve your birth experience.
The Benefit
Women can be uniquely understanding of that emotional and mental need of the birthing woman, to have the ability to let go of some things and let another woman stand in that gap for you when you need to focus so hard on the consuming birth process. That encouraging and supportive voice that is simply always there. Guiding you back if you start to get lost. Holding you up if you feel like you’re starting to drown. And sharing wisdom and encouragement if you feel lost or confused.
The Challenge
I am convinced that birth wasn’t meant to be what it has become in the USA. Fear plays a major role in making the process so much more difficult and painful than it needs to be… and we have very much made birth terrifying and too often traumatic in our culture.
Many women I encounter today who have adult children of their own are finding themselves in a challenging position. They want to be supportive, encouraging and positive during their own children’s (or their partner’s) pregnancy and birth, but so often they had a negative or traumatic experience themselves. So they feel lost and overwhelmed.
The Solution
If you’d like to reclaim that positivity for not just your loved ones, but maybe for your own experiences, I want to talk a little bit about a unique service I offer. It’s my privilege to walk through the journey of learning current, evidence based facts that encourage women in supporting other women through pregnancy and birth.
It doesn’t mean you suddenly have an answer to every question, but what it does offer you is the opportunity to put a confident, positive, supporting and encouraging spin on your role in your loved one’s life. Right now I offer custom courses that are entirely based on what you need to provide effective, confident birth support. Please feel free to hop on over to my Women Supporting Women page to find out even more about it, or contact me to schedule a free consultation.
